2-Post vs 4-Post Car Lift: Which One Do You Need?

If you’re buying your first car lift — or adding a second one to your shop — the most common question is always the same: 2-post or 4-post?

Both are excellent tools. But they’re built for different jobs. Choosing the wrong one means spending money on something that doesn’t actually solve your problem.

Here’s how to think about it.

What Is a 2-Post Car Lift?

A two-post lift holds the vehicle by its frame or pinch weld, lifting it entirely off the ground with the wheels hanging free. This gives you complete access to the undercarriage — brakes, suspension, exhaust, drivetrain, everything.

It’s the standard lift in professional repair shops for a reason: it’s fast, versatile, and gives you the best access for mechanical work.

Best for:

  • Oil changes and fluid service
  • Brake jobs and rotor replacement
  • Suspension and alignment work
  • Exhaust and drivetrain repairs
  • Tire and wheel service

What to keep in mind: The vehicle is supported at contact points, so the load is more concentrated. You need to know your vehicle’s lift points — and the lift needs to be ALI certified to guarantee it’s been tested to hold what it claims.

What Is a 4-Post Car Lift?

A four-post lift drives the vehicle onto two ramps and lifts the whole platform — tires included. The vehicle sits on its own wheels the whole time.

This makes it more stable and easier to load, which is why it’s the preferred option for storage. You can stack a car on top and park another one underneath, doubling your floor space. For lighter maintenance like oil changes, it works too — but you lose access to the wheels and suspension without adding a separate rolling jack.

Best for:

  • Vehicle storage (car collectors, enthusiasts)
  • Doubling parking capacity in a home garage
  • Oil changes and basic maintenance (with a jack)
  • Long-term parking of project cars or classics
  • Lower ceilings — 4-post lifts typically need less overhead clearance

What to keep in mind: If your primary goal is mechanical service, the 4-post will frustrate you. You’ll constantly be working around the ramps to access what you need.

The Simple Rule

If you work on cars, get a 2-post.
If you store cars, get a 4-post.

If you do both — welcome to the club. Most serious enthusiasts and growing shops end up with one of each.

A Note on Capacity

Regardless of which style you choose, always check the rated lifting capacity before buying. A 10,000 lb capacity lift covers the vast majority of passenger cars, SUVs, and light trucks. If you’re regularly working on heavier vehicles, look for 12,000 lbs or more.

And always, always look for ALI certification. The Automotive Lift Institute tests lifts independently and certifies that they actually hold what the spec sheet claims. If a lift doesn’t carry the ALI seal, you’re taking the manufacturer’s word for it — and that’s a risk not worth taking.

Krebs Makes Both

The KB10 is our two-post, 10,000 lb ALI-certified lift — built for professional shops and serious home garages. The KB4 is our four-post storage lift, designed for collectors and anyone who wants to double their parking space.

Both are available in multiple colors and built with ASTM A36 carbon steel and robotic welding.
